If a genetic contribution exists, the disorder should be present in identical twins to a much greater extent than in fraternal twins. Individuals with bipolar are genetically susceptible to depression and independently genetically susceptible to mania. Not a solid hypothesis though: 60-80% of depression can be attributed to environmental factors. But when it was given to depressed patients, much less suppression was noticed and approx. Depressed individuals exhibit greater right sided anterior activation of their brains, particularly in the pfc, than nondepressed individuals. Stressful life events are strongly related to the onset of mood disorders. Not all stressful events are totally independent of the depression. Genes may increase the probability that we will experience stressful events gene environment correlation model. 1/3rd of the association between stressful life events and depression is not the usual arrangement of stress triggering depression, but rather individuals vulnerable to depression who are placing themselves in high risk stressful environments.
