Document Summary
** not every piece of information will go through all the stages. ** many factors contribute to the information we remember. Recall memory: primary goal of an officer interviewing an eyewitness is to extract information from the witness a complete and accurate report of what happened. The misinformation effect: where a witness who is presented with inaccurate information after an event will incorporate that misinformation into a subsequent recall task. How can misinformation happen in real life: officer can make assumption about what occurred or what was witnessed, then inadvertently phrase a question consistent with his/her assumption. I. e did you see the gun: rather than: did you see a gun, witnesses overhearing each others statements, officer might incorporate erroneous detail from a previous witness interview. Hypnosis: may be able to recall a greater amount of accurate information, difficulty is not being able to differentiate between the accurate and inaccurate details.
