Document Summary
Psychology 2035 chapter 5: psychology and physical health. In 1900s cancer caused 3% of deaths, whereas in 2005 accounted for 22% of deaths. During the same time frame, heart disease rose from 6% to 26%. Our life span has increased at the same time, from 47 years to over 77 years. People"s health is (cid:373)ore likely to (cid:271)e (cid:272)o(cid:373)pro(cid:373)ised (cid:271)y (cid:272)hro(cid:374)i(cid:272) diseases tha(cid:374) (cid:271)y (cid:272)o(cid:374)tagious diseases. Coronary heart disease results from a reduction in blood flow through the coronary arteries, which supply the heart with blood. Causes 90% of heart related deaths: atherosclerosis is the principle cause of coronary disease. Atherosclerosis is a gradual narrowing of the coronary arteries caused by the buildup of fatty deposits and other debris on the inner walls. Myocardial ischemia occurs when the heart is temporarily deprived of adequate blood flow. Found a marker in the blood called the c-reactive proteins (crp) that may help doctors estimate people"s coronary risk.
