Important characteristics: there is a window of vulnerability in adolescence. Interventions should be progressive as well: substance abuse of all kinds is predicted by some of the same factors. Most of these are more common in lower-social class and are associated with attitudes toward health that may develop from exposure to hardships and poor health.
