Important characteristics: there is a window of vulnerability in adolescence. Interventions should be progressive as well: substance abuse of all kinds is predicted by some of the same factors. Most of these are more common in lower-social class and are associated with attitudes toward health that may develop from exposure to hardships and poor health. Lower social class provides more stressful circumstances with which the adolescent may need to cope.
