Reading 2 - chapter 2: theories of personalities. Refers to an individual"s unique constellation of consistent behavioural traits. Is a durable disposition to behave in a particular way in a variety of situations. Most trait theories of personality assume that some traits are more basic than others according to this notion, a small number of fundamental traits determine other, more superficial traits. Example: a person"s tendency to be impulsive, irritable and impatient might all be derived from a more basic tendency to be excitable. This model asserts that the vast majority of personality traits derive from just five higher-order traits that have come to be known as the big five : High score in this area characteristics are outgoing, sociable, upbeat, friendly, assertive, and gregarious. Have a positive outlook on life and motivated to pursue social contact, intimacy, and interdependence. High score in this area characteristics are anxious, hostile, self- conscious, insecure, and vulnerable.
