Document Summary

Reading 7 - chapter 3: stress and its effects. Stress has been used in different ways. Stress as any circumstances or are perceived to threaten one"s well-being and thereby tax one"s coping abilities. For many of us, stress levels are higher than what is considered healthy. Women, younger americans and parents appear more susceptible to stress. Research shows that routine hassles may have significant negative effects on a person"s mental and physical health. Elevated levels of major and minor stress were associated with increased mortality, but the impacts of hassles were actually somewhat greater than that or major stressors. Many theorists believe that stressful events can have a cumulative or additive impact. Stress lies in the eye of the beholder. Stress depends on how you choose to appraise the situation. Appraisal accounts for many of the individual differences in reactions to potential stressors. Ex. events that are stressful to one person might be routine for another.
