Ancient greeks believed that disease resulted when the four humors of the body - blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm - were out of balance. They also described personality types associated with each of the humors: blood - passionate temperament, black bile - sadness, yellow bile - angry disposition, phlegm - laid-back approach to life. Middle ages: disease was regarded as god"s punishment for evildoing, cure often consisted of clearing the body of evil forces by torturing the body. Was replaced by penance through prayer. healing and religion became virtually indistinguishable. Reduces illness to low-level processes such as disordered cells and chemical imbalances.
