Document Summary
Attitudes: evaluations of a person, object or idea. Components of attitude: affective emotional reaction toward the attitude object, cognitive thoughts and beliefs toward the attitude object, behavioural observable behaviour toward the attitude object. Affectively based attitude based primarily on people"s emotions toward object: do not result from a rational examination of the issues, not governed by logic (persuasive arguments seldom change attitudes, often linked to peoples values, ex. A car"s mileage, does the car have air conditioning, how well a vacuum picks up dirt. Ask a friend if she likes exercising he/she replies well, i always seem to be going out for runs . Explicit attitudes: explicit consciously endorsed and can be easily reported. Implicit and explicit tend to be positively correlated when people are asked to reflect their feelings about an attitude object. Implicit attitudes are usually rooted more people"s childhood experiences, while explicit attitudes are rooted more in their recent experiences.
