Document Summary
Conformity: a change in behaviour as a result of the real or imagined in uence of other people. Occurs across species and isn"t inherently good or bad. Tendency to conform is so powerful it can override behaviours that promote survival. North american culture stresses importance of not conforming. We belief that our behaviour isn"t in uenced by others even when reality suggests otherwise. More likely to conform when people believe the task is important. If you accept other people"s de nition of a situation you will see the world as they do. When you are unsure of the correct response or behaviour you will rely more on others. Especially likely to be in uenced by actions of those around you. The people we imitate may be scared an panicky and won"t behave rationally. Contagion: the rapid transmission of emotions or behaviour through a crowd.
