As they reach, a chemical secreted by the egg attracts them: the egg is surrounded by a layer called the zona pellucida, sperm swim around the egg and secrete hyaluronidase which dissolved the zona pellucida. The fertilized egg is called the zygote: after 26 hours after conception, it begins the process of cell division, after 5-7 days, the mass of cells implants itself in the lining of the uterus. For the first two weeks of gestation the conceptus is called a zygote: then between weeks of 2 and 8 it is called an embryo, from then on, it is called a fetus.
