Document Summary

Sound, to a physicist, is a series of changes in mechanical pressure in an elastic medium, such as air or water. (wavelength ) Sound is transmitted as air molecules collide with one another thus moving the pressure wave through space. Each of these collisions loose a bit of energy, so the pressure variations are less intense as the sound wave moves away from the source. The ability to move or vibrate other objects, such as our eardrums, grows weaker the farther we are from a sound source. Wavelength: distance from one peak of the wave to the next. Frequency (hz) : the number of cycles completed during one second. All still travel the same distance over the same period of time. Pitch: whether we are experiencing a high or low frequency. The range of frequencies that seem to have pitch for people with normal hearing is from about 20 to 20000 hz.
