Formed the basis for the de nition of mood disorders. Freud and abraham recognized that some individuals develop depression in the absence of loss. Imagined loss- some individuals unconsciously interprets other types of events as severe loss events. The impact of events interpreted as loss (eg. argument with friend) is more severe. Depression is distinguished from normal mood uctuations by its duration and severity: eg. symptoms must be present for most of the day, more days than not, for at least two weeks (duration). Individuals who meet criteria or acquire more than an hour to fall sleep every night (severity). Depression is continuous in nature, and individuals who do not have 5 out of 9 symptoms (maybe have 3) may still suffer. Should be de ned dimensionally as a continuum with sad mood. Mood disorders are either unipolar (no mania) or bipolar (depression and mania cycle) Mdd is the leading cause of disability worldwide.
