Professionals rely on a diagnostic (or classification) system. System of rules for recognizing and grouping various types of abnormalities. Ability to categorize info allows scientists to better identify and understand various phenomena. Gives a vocabulary for communicating about disorders with others. Assessment: procedure through which info is gathered systematically in the evaluation of a condition. Info from assessments contributes to the formulation of a diagnosis. Would classify disorders on the basis of a study of presenting symptoms, etiology, prognosis, and response to treatment. There would be no overlap in the symptom profiles presented by patients. Human beings are incredibly complex, rapidly changing, and socially embedded. Heuristic value: allows the investigation and clarification of issues related to a problem area. Reliability: give the same measurement for a given thing every time.
