A group is defined as a collection of three or more people who interact with one another and are independent in the sense that their needs and goals cause them to rely on one another. People who have assembled together for a common purpose. Forming relationships with other people fulfills a number of basic human needs. People monitor their status in groups and look for any sign that they might be rejected. Another important function is that groups help us define who we are. Also plays an important role in motivating people to become involved in social change: those who identify more strongly with their group are more likely to engage in. James cameron: groups help us defined who we expect to be in the future social action: also help establish social norms, the explicit or implicit rules defining what is acceptable behaviour. If groups become too large you cant interact with all the members.
