Comparative study of animal and human behaviour. So aggression should be discharged in social appropriate ways (i. e. sports) Other species have inhibition against killing their own kind, but not humans: inhibitions unnecessary before the advent of modern weapons, given rise to uncontrolled levels of aggression & violence. Multiple (convincing) arguments against this theory: humans can perform several aggressive acts in quick succession, theory of sports aggression proven wrong, much research disproves the catharsis hypothesis. Sociobiological view enhance the chances of survival of the species as a whole in the environment in. Aggression as a product of natural selection, focusing on long-term mechanisms. Functional mechanism driving evolution of aggressive behaviour is a cost-benefit calc. Evidence is largely correlational (size = strength = physical aggression) Explores the role of genetic similarity in explaining personal characteristics & behaviour. Dilalla and gottesman (1991) genetic + environment may have additive effects. Burt (2009) genetic similarity played a greater role.
