Sociology 2241E Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Hijab
Document Summary
Chapter 6 - listening to the voices of hijab by tabassum f. ruby. In canada, the hijab is often seen as a tool of oppression, where women are forced to cover their faces, restricting their mobility and identity. Many muslim women claim that they enjoy wearing their hijab, and that is marks their identity, gives them control of their bodies, and give them a sense of belonging in the muslim world. If women are to leave the home, they should wear the hijab because they can cause fitnah (temptation) However, scholars interpreting the qur"an state that the temptation is not in reference to sexual desire, but rather money and severe trials and tribulations. Islam requires lowering of the gaze/guarding modesty for both men and women. Physically; the hijab is a head scarf, but wearing a hijab also entails wearing modest clothing as well. Behaviourally, the hijab refers to acting in a modest manner.
