Document Summary

Chapter 3: believing is seeing: biology as ideology by judith lorber. The basic bodily material is the same for males and females (except for reproductive organs and certain hormones) Our society enjoys these categories, because men and women are seen as two opposing species, even though we are all just human. These categories distinguish that men must be male and women must be female. Lorber argues that though male and female bodies differ in many ways physiologically, they are completely transformed by social practices to fit into certain categories of society. Men are more likely to take the wheel in a car when driving with a women, even if their driving skills are worse that the woman"s. Lorber stressed the fact that although there are differences in the anatomy of men and women, those differences are not socially significant and therefore should not play any role in categorizing male and female gender.
