Sociology 2241E Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Bsc Young Boys, Sexual Assault, Marital Rape
Document Summary
Virtually all of the violent crime in the world is committed by men: seems so natural that it generates no media analysis. However, if it were a woman who committed a crime, this would be huge: gender becomes invisible in the analysis of crime. Worldwide, men constitute 98% of all persons arrested for rape, murder, robbery, assault, family violence and disorderly conduct. Gender alone is a highly significant predictor of violent behaviour. Male propensity toward violence is related to their greater tendency toward risk-taking behaviours and rule-breaking in general. 20% of all high speed car chases end in serious injury or death: because it is almost always younger male police officers doing the chasing. Violent crime rises any time there is an unusually high proportion of the population of young men between 15-24. The two innate biological variables that are predictors of violence are youth and maleness: gender and age are the two most powerful predictors of violence.
