Document Summary

Here"s my story : fathers of looked after children recount their experiences in the canadian. Practitioners configure fathers in the welfare system of their status around the good dad - bad dad binary. Fathers described their experiences of being fathers and highlighted the strategies they used to convince child welfare practitioners that they were good enough fathers who could be trusted to care for their children. First nations children are over-represented in canada"s child welfare system (one in three of those in care) The theme of fathers" resistance to being bad dads was significant. It showed that fathers employed a range of strategies to get social workers to accept that they were responsible enough to play significant roles in children"s lives. Interviewed 11 fathers who volunteered following publicity about the project in child care agencies or being told about it by welfare workers.
