Gender comprises the feelings, attitudes and behaviours associated with being male or female. Identi cation with a certain sex is called gender identity. When people behave according to gender expectations, they are adopting a gender role. People are transgendered when their gender identity and their sex do not coincide. Transsexuals change their appearance or undergo sex change operations. If gender reassignment takes place before 18 months it tends to be successful. Activities that are intended to lead to erotic arousal and produce genital response are referred to as sexuality. Sexual scripts - who we should nd attractive, when/where to be aroused, what is permissible, how to behave sexually. Heterosexuality is based on unequal economic, political, legal and social relations between women and men. Sexual orientation refers to the way a person derives pleasure. The four sexual continua: attraction, desire, behaviour, identity.
