Chapter 2 theoretical approaches to the youth question: little no guidance from families of origin or a specific organized religion. Developed alongside and as an alternative to postmodernism. Foundation was developed by giddens and beck which has been adapted for youth studies by. Concern w/ societal problems that are associated with institutional breaking down, yet stresses the importance of personal/individual agency regarding dealing w/ problematic contexts in a social aspect. Gidden"s perspective focuses on the transition to adulthood regarding normative structures that can guide youth during the transition stage. These structures are based on values, patterns, and standards of behaviour that give meaning to people"s lives. De-structuring of durkheim"s writing has resulted in a decline in the social markers of adulthood especially those raised /w secular values while certain religious and ethnic families can preserve specific norms.
