Institutions: an institution is an established and enduring organization of social relationships, the 5 traditional institutions are family, religion, politics, economics and education, many social problems result from inadequacies in institutions or conflicts between institutions. This could be gender and race or even one"s occupation. Roles: every status is associated with many roles the rights, obligations and expectations associated with a status. Symbols: a symbol is something that represents something else, example- a peace sign communicates the value of nonviolence, a police badge symbolizes the authority of law. Also referred to as marxist theory : as societies shift from agricultural to industrial, a subsistence economy is replaced by a profit making economy, the hallmark of capitalism. Queer theory now asks how sexual identity relates to various problems rooted in oppression and prejudice. It provides an important analytic tool to understand that oppressive treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons in societal structures and in cultural representation.
