Claims-making aciviies: the strategies and acions that individuals or groups undertake to deine social condiions as social problems that require remedies. Social problem: a social condiion that a segment of society views as harmful to members and is in need of remedy. Social facts: phenomena created by social organizaion rather than individual acts of desperaion. Elements of a social structure (the organizaion of society) Insituions: an established and enduring organizaion of social relaionships: family, religion, poliics, economics, educaion. Social groups: 2 + people who have a common idenity, interact, and form a social relaionship: primary group: characterized by a small number of inimate and informal interacion. Family and friends: secondary group: characterized by a small or large number of task-orientated individuals, with impersonal and formal interacions.
