Soc 2171: the opposing values related to power distance and individualism, freedom vs. dependence: in high power distance and collectivistic cultures, children remain dependent on their parents much longer. In low power distance and individualistic cultures, children are supposed to go their own way, be self-reliant and make their own decisions at a young age. Independence is a widely used concept in western ads, as well as in japan and russia. In japan, an appeal in advertising is independence as opposed to dependency. Large part of their culture: related to dependency are the opposing values and paradoxes of freedom, freedom vs. harmony: in a collectivistic culture, the opposing values are freedom and harmony. In comparison, in weak uncertainty avoidance cultures, freedom breeds success: people take risks to succeed. Success paradoxes: the desirable in short-term cultures is to show one"s success natural to show it off.
