Scholarly definitions of intimate relationships often include five relational components commitment, deep feelings, and expressions of caring and compassion, thinking about another and sharing values and goals, physical intimacy ranging from close proximity to sexuality, and interdependence. Intimate relationships include pure relationships and those ties that are formalized by marriage. We tend to view change, particularly in the realm of sexuality and intimate relationships, as the purview of young people. Aging is often associated with greater tolerance among older individuals the longer we live, the more change is a constant feature of our lives and a lifetime commitment a much longer reality. It"s also related to health, both psychologically and physically. The married are more healthy than unmarried individuals however, among the unmarried the never married report higher levels of life satisfaction and well-being than the widowed, divorced, and separated. The lower morale of the widowed compared to the single indicates the greater negative impact of desolation than isolation.
