Sociology 2206A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter Chapter 6: Semantic Differential, Likert Scale, Face Validity
Document Summary
A person or family is said to be in poverty if their family income is below the lico for their family size and geographic location. Instead, he or she develops flexible, ongoing processes to measure the data that leave them in various shapes, sizes and forms: all researchers combine ideas and data to analyze the social world. Conceptualization: the process of developing clear, rigorous, systematic conceptual definitions for abstract ideas or concepts. Conceptual definition: a careful, systematic definition of a construct that is explicitly written to clarify one"s thinking. It is often linked to other concepts or theoretical statements: lets say you believe that prejudice means an inflexible negative attitude that an individual holds and is directed toward a race or ethnic group that is an out-group. Operationalization: the process of moving from the conceptual definition of a concept to a set of specific activities or measures that allow a researcher to observe it empirically (i. e. its operational definition)
