Chapter 8 stress and violence: realities of family life. Family stress a state that arises from an actual or sensed imbalance b/w a stressor and capability in the family"s functioning. The abcx model focuses on variables pre-crisis to determine how the family will cope with the stressor and was originally designed to analyze family adjustment during the war. It is now used to examine how families cope with difficult problems. Stress is influenced by the severity, duration, intensity, and timing of the stressor which can be analyzed subjectively and objectively. An outsider can provide an objective evaluation related to component a of the model; done by measuring how long the period of stress lasted and how often it occurs. More occurrence = more strain on resources and less ability to cope efficiently. Family members view of the event controls their reaction to it, which is subjective and relates to component c.
