Sociology 2246A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Feminist Theory, Post-Structuralism, Mcdonaldization
Document Summary
Chapter 15 - nursing in the twenty-first century. Nurses play a significant role in the delivery, management, and research of health-care services. Nurses make up the largest group of health care providers. The approach of nurses has always been holistic - however, nursing shortages have become more prevalent. After wwii, training for nurses began to include clinical and technological advances which led to input from the social sciences into the nursing curricula. This stemmed from the view that nurses needed to understand the social context of health-care delivery & their patient"s needs. Sociology was concerned w/ roles and relationships. More approaches influenced nursing education in the 1970s and new interpretations based in feminist theory began to appear. These courses promoted a more critical examination of the nursing practice in relation to other occupations. Thes new approaches presented nursing in a negative light & it was viewed as a subordinate occupation.
