Section 718 of the criminal code sets out the purpose and principles of sentencing: To deter the offender and other persons from committing offences. To separate offenders from society, where necessary. To provide reparations for harm done to victims or to the community. To promote a sense of responsibility in offenders, and acknowledgement of the harm done to victims and to the community. Sentence must be proportional to the gravity of the offence and to the degree of responsibility of the offender. The court imposing a sentence must take into account several principles: Goals of sentencing fall into three categories: utilitarian focus on the future conduct of the offenders and others who might commit similar offences. The sentence is designed to protect the public from future crimes through: General deterrence: discouraging potential offenders from committing future crimes. Specific deterrence: discouraging specific offenders from committing crimes again.
