Criminology: scientific study of crime and criminal behavior from a social perspective; includes within its scope the processes by which laws are made, laws are broken, and reactions to breaking the law. Criminal justice: study of social control and the agencies that are involved in the capture, prosecution, defense, sentencing, imprisonment and supervision of those suspected or charged with or convicted of criminal offences. Criminal justice system: all the agencies, organizations, and personnel that are involved in the prevention of, and response to, crime and to persons charged with criminal offences and persons convicted of crimes. Consists of three agencies: police, courts, correctional/prison system. These agencies operate under authority of federal and provincial/territorial governments. Due process model: an orientation to criminal justice in which the legal rights of individual citizens, including crime suspects; ensure equal justice for all citizens. Administration of justice: deliberate, ensure procedural fairness. Protecting citizens from the potential abuses of the power that police and prosecutors have.
