Document Summary
Other forms of physical appearance are involuntary in nature, such as height, size of nose, shape of eyes, or visible disabilities. Although these people have little to no control regarding these aspects of their physical appearance, they may still be stigmatized in society (teased, laughed at, excluded from opportunities) Some forms of physical appearance combine voluntary and involuntary aspects ex- body weight: people choose how much to eat/ how much physical activity to partake in (voluntary), however psychological, social and biological factors may in uence these outcomes (involuntary) What is considered voluntary varies across cultures and over time, and may even vary across subgroups within a single culture. Ex: weight loss, muscle building, laser hair removal: redesigning projects: projects that reconstruct the body in lasting ways ex: plastic surgery, tattoos and body piercings. Various body projects may change the functioning of our bodies (contact lenses) or modify the appearance of our bodies (weight loss)
