The populations most dependent on formal care with no potential support from a child or a spouse will increase more sharply in canada than france. The type of care older people receive is closely linked to the type of household they live in, more broadly to their family composition. Spouse and children are primary carers of dependent older people. Older people living with a spouse are in better financial situation, are in better health, and are more socially integrated. Marital status has a major influence on the household structure of older people. More women grow old alone where as males usually grow old with a spouse. Marital status and surviving children strongly influence the living arrangements of older people. Health is also a determinant, people in better health are more likely to live with a spouse.
