Every woman responds to breast cancer (and really any medical problem) The author believes that women"s feelings need to be voiced in order to be recognized, respected, and used in a beneficial way. Imposed silence is a tool used by the dominant to separate women from society and deem them to be powerless. Breast cancer & mastectomies are not unique experiences as thousands of women share this medical occurrence. Commonality of isolation and painful reassessment shared by all women experiencing breast cancer. All struggle with the pressures of conformity, as well as a feeling of loneliness when a choice for treatment/intervention is made that others do not think is the correct choice. Only you know what is best for your body. Although she is scared of what the future holds for her, she realizes she must speak now to liberate herself, and not live in fear.
