Paragraphs require unity, coherence and well-controlled emphasis. An effective body paragraph ordinarily deals w/one main idea: single purpose engages readers by focusing attention on main idea. Coherence is essential for the essay not to fall apart. Ensure coherence in your writing: by carefully organizing your material, by using a variety of transitional devices that create structural coherence. Must have a beginning, middle and ending. Body paragraphs begin w/a topic sentence (statement of main idea) Functions of the topic sentence: refer to the subject of the essay &at least suggest the relation of the paragraph to the subject, provide transition so that the new paragraph flows smoothly from preceding paragraph. Sometimes can add forward-looking material at the end of a paragraph. Should be more than a table of contents: should be a significant part of the contents of the para. Development of a paragraph fulfills the promise made in an opening topic sentence.
