The discovery of the school of gladiators at caruntum, austria - neubauer (2014) Non-invasive exploration of archaeological site of caruntum, austria which used to be the capital city in the roman province of pannonia. Excavations in the late 19th & 20th centuries reealed many of the major element of the complex: legionary fortress, civilian town, municipium. Discovery was made possible by systematically applying a multidisciplinary approach based on remote sensing and geophysical prospection. Features found within the complex were mapped in 3d with unprecedented detail. The preservation of this school is unique within the roman empire. The site has been investigated by archaeologists for more than a century. Few monuments that date to roman times stand above ground presently. Repeated aerieal reconnaissance flights over carnuntum in the 1990"s showed vague soil and vegetation marks in a field west of the amphitheatre indicating for the first time the buried remains of a building.
