1. 1 - criminology as a field of study. Criminology is an interdisciplinary discipline which means it contains two or more academic fields of study. For example, the department of criminology here at wilfrid laurier university is comprised of professors with backgrounds that include sociology, psychology, law, philosophy, and criminology. This interdisciplinary approach means that there are varied and often competing perspectives to issues of crime and criminality and how we, as individuals, and as a society should deal with the issues. In addition, it is important to understand that certain issues are more dominant across communities and countries. As the text states in the field of criminology each country has its own unique social concerns, intellectual milieu, political traditions, historical development, and therefore, its own theoretical emphasis and biases. There are three primary areas of focus within the discipline of criminology.
