~ purposes - accountability, denunciation, deterrence, protection, rehabilitation, reparation. ~ principles - should reflect: seriousness of offence, degree of responsibility of offender, aggravating/mitigating factors. ~ aggravating factors - motivated by hate, spouse and child abuse, abusing position of trust or authority, connected with criminal organization. Restorative - crime harms victim, offender, community, victim-offender mediation, circle sentencing. Absolute - guilty but not convicted, released with no record. Suspended - convicted, suspended pending completion of probation. Intermittent - sentenced to jail on weekends, subject to conditions. Conditional - sentenced to confinement served in community under supervision. ~ fine - pay money in set time, fail to do so = imprisonment. ~ probation - supervised in community, must adhere to conditions. (most common sentence) ~ consecutive - run separately, completed one after another. ~ intermittent - served part-time, generally weekends, usually also have probation. ~ judicial determination - order by sentencing judge that offender serve of sentence before eligibility for parole.
