Symbols are things whose special meaning allows us to conceive, express, and communicate ideas: ex. Signs are a subcategory of symbols: they convey meaning but they differ in carrying narrow, precise, and unambiguous information. Symbols help us to conceive and reflect on ideas, whereas signs are communication devices bound to action. Symbols are ephemeral do not survive the societies that create them: the meaning they carry is arbitrary. The colour black, which symbolizes death in our culture could very well stand for life in another: their meaning cannot be perceived by the senses or by logic but can only be learned from those who use them.
