People take looks as indicators of a person"s background, character, personality, talents, and likely future behaviour. Initially we respond more favourably to those we perceive as attractive. Attractive people are perceived as successful, more popular/sociable/persuasive, etc. Physical attractiveness may also be associated with undesirable traits vanity, egoism, snobbish, etc: however research still suggests that it is far better to be attractive than unattractive. Physical attraction may be most important when dating involves short-term goals and more public, rather than private, activities. Matching hypothesis select a person similar to yourself in physical attractiveness. For short-term or casual sexual relationships, women prefer men with masculine faces thicker eyebrows, smaller eyes, square jaw and a high shoulder-to-waist ratio. In long term relationships both men and women indicate they look for other qualities besides physical attractiveness. Physical attractiveness may be an advantage in obtaining a job/more prestigious job, or being hired at a higher salary.
