Document Summary

Epicentre near town of leogane, 25km west of capital. Lack of care from haiti caused so much deaths i. e. bad building materials, etc. We need to be more proactive, not reactive, in regards to helping developing countries. Where hazards occur: western na prone to quakes and lanslides and volcanic eruptions, pacific coast = tsunamis, atlantic and gulf of mexico = hurricanes, forested areas = fires, midcontinent = tornadoes and blizzards, drought and flooding everywhere. Death and damage caused by natural hazards: order of largest killers: flooding, quakes, volcanoes, windstorms, since 1974, 2. 5 million deaths from natural disasters (asia has greatest losses) Impact: the size of an event or the amount of energy released. Magnitude-frequency concept: inverse exponential relationship exists between the magnitude of an event and its frequency: m = fe-x. Recurrence interval: average time separating 2 events of the same magnitude. Ironically, efforts to reduce floods may actually cause larger, more frequent floods.
