Document Summary
Locke defines political power as being outside of the home or family, it doesn"t interfere with personal lives of its citizen or the decisions they use towards their freedoms. It also doesn"t encompass the market sector of life, the market should be free to prosper and develop as it would due to personal competition. Political power is not in place to enforce rules or to restrict the people"s freedoms but rather to protect these freedoms, only acting when these freedoms are in jeopardy. Men in the state of nature are rational and tolerant, they are able to fight for what they want and for the best possible life for themselves. This also makes them selfish, their need to prosper in greedy ways led to the introduction of currency for example. There is also an inherent right to defend their life, liberty, health and possession (the pursuit of happiness).
