Document Summary

Chapter 12: aging and involvement in sport and physical activity. Physical activity levels decrease as we get older. Older adults need to be mindful of getting enough physical activity to meet the requirements. Participation is aerobic exercise is not enough for adults. To reduce mass muscle loss (sarcopenia) that occurs with age, older adults also must engage in exercise that taxes their muscles. Some research suggests that many physical and cognitive declines associated with aging are to the fact of a long-sedentary lifestyle. Declining involvement and declining ability both happen when we age. The maintenance of skilled performance over time has been explained primarily using one of two models; compensation model and the selective maintenance model. Compensation theory is a theory of aging based on the natio that age-related losses in one area can be offset by improvements in another area. Skilled performers strategically compensate for a decline in one area by developing skills in another.
