Document Summary

Some of most enduring pop songs of period created by well-known producers. Producers increasingly experimented with ways to make their records more musically sophisticated. Some established a trademark sound that distinguished their records. Teen pop records initiated important shift away from idea that a record should represent a recorded version of a live performance to the concept of a record as kind of performance in its own right. Increased focus on recording studio and sounds it could produce would resonate in almost all rock music that followed. During early years of rock, many performers brought their own fully worked-up arrangements of songs from the country and western and r&b repertoire into the recording studio. In mainstream pop, artists used songs written and arranged by professionals. Most record companies employed a&r (artists and repertoire) people who organized and coordinated various professionals involved in making a record.
