By beginning of 94, bob dylan was among most respected young folksingers in us. Enjoyed success mostly on album charts in absence of hit singles. Started off singing about social justice, became increasingly focused on his own feelings and attempts to understand the world. Folk community did not express overwhelmingly negative reaction to his electrified music perhaps because pf the strong acoustic-based material. Became controversial after playing newport folk festival in july 1965. Audience and supporters felt betrayed by his turn to electric instruments. Felt he sold out to pop and became target of strong criticism within folk circles. Used positively 4th street to point finger at folk establishment who he felt had unfairly criticized him. Almost killed in motorcycle accident in july 1966 and left spotlight for a few months.
