Document Summary

New wave bands had a clear fascination with earlier music styles. Costello wore horn rimmed glasses like buddy holly. Did this in era of bellbottoms and shoulder length hair. The hand claps heard on track my best friend"s girl reminiscent of 60s girl group recordings. Track contains rockabilly guitar licks inspired by carl perkins, elvis presley or gene. Repeated organ chords reminiscent of 60s garage band sound. Vocal hiccups imitating buddy holly and naive innocence of much teen music before mid 60s. Compound aaba form not reminiscent of hippie rock however still much simpler in harmonic content than prog bands like boston. Rock music from psychedelia through late 70s founded on hippie aesthetic. New wave musicians moved away from these governing principles. However, in rejecting hippie present, new wavers were not advocating a return to rocks past. Instead, they were making ironic references to earlier music.
