MU158 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Faith Healing, Music Therapy, Outline Of Health Sciences
Document Summary
Every health profession must establish limits of boundaries of its clinical practice to address most fundamental of all ethical concerns: do no harm . When health professionals go beyond their competence/expertise they risk endangering their client. When music therapists use methods in which they are not qualified (guided imagery and music, neurologic music therapy, analytical music therapy), they risk harm to client. Major task for every health professional is to determine which practices are within its boundaries and which are not. In music therapy, therapists must define the scope of practice. Challenge of defining any discipline or profession is to not be overly exclusionary or overly inclusionary. Questions that pose the most serious boundary dilemmas in music therapy: Research would help a great deal in comparing and integrating these perspectives. Music therapy is global in its conception and manifestation. Global because it exists as a profession in most industrialized nations around the world.
