MU158 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Thyroid Cartilage, Thyroarytenoid Muscle, Vocal Folds
Document Summary
Air from lungs rises through right and left bronchial tubes. Only complete ring is the top one, cricoid cartilage. Larger than the rest of the rings and forms base of larynx. Ladles slide along upper surface of ring cartilage and can move together and apart and tip forward, back and to side, always moving counter to each other. The part of larynx that can be felt under skin is the thyroid cartilage. Formed of 2 flat surfaces that meet in front at an angle. Angle is wider in women, making larynx flatter. Thyroid cartilage turns from cartilage to bone during early 20s (one of reasons why voice changes with age) Ring, shield, and two ladles form stiff framework of larynx. Inner surfaces of larynx covered with mucous membrane. When its infected, you have laryngitis and may lose voice. Cords rejected because they are not like strings at all.
