MU194 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Protestant Work Ethic
Document Summary
Motivation is derived from latin movere, meaning to move . Process of starting, directing, and maintaining both physiological and psychological activities. Broadly embraces all internal mechanisms involved in making decisions concerning what actions one should take. 1) preferences for certain activites over others, 2) enthusiasm and vigor of responses, 3) persistence of action toward a desired goal. Achievement motivation energizes and directs our behaviour and also influences how we perceive and interpret many situations including others" behaviour. Protestant work ethic suggests hard work is a culturally learned behaviour. Work motivation is based on theory that workers are motivated when work is interesting and achievable and believe their effort and performance will produce successful outcomes. Self perceptions and behavioural outcomes can be greatly influenced by the attributional styles we develop. Pessimists attribute problems to stable internal global factors by placing blame on selves and basic nature. Optimists tend to interpret problems as result or stable external specific factors.
