OL109 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Speech Disfluency, Kinesics, Paralanguage
Document Summary
Non-verbal communication: messages expressed by non-linguistic means; they can include vocal communication (e. g. , voice tone), but not language (e. g. , sign language) All non-verbal behaviour conveys information, it is impossible not to communicate. No matter what we do, we send out messages about ourselves and our relationships with others. Although, non-verbal communication reveals information, we are not always conscious of what we are communicating: non-verbal communication is primarily rational. Allows us to define the relationships we have with others: wave, shake hands, give a hug, kiss or avoid contact. Conveys emotions we may be unwilling to express or that we may not be aware of. Much better suited to express attitudes than ideas: non-verbal communication is ambiguous. Non-verbal behaviour has the potential to be more ambiguous than verbal statements: non-verbal communication is influenced by culture and gender. Cultures have different non-verbal languages as well as verbal ones. Emblems: culturally understood substitutes for verbal expressions: convey meaning independently of words, used consciously.
