PS101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Temporal Lobe, Dyslexia, Andrew N. Meltzoff
Document Summary
Fetuses show habituation and sensitization to smells and other sensory stimuli ex: babies who had been prenatally exposed to garlic through mother"s digestion. Most babies have a tendency to avoid the smell of garlic. These babies exposed to the smell of garlic in the womb instantly recognized garlic odour after birth and did not try to avoid the smell. Humans are capable of basic associative learning before birth ex: researchers paired specific music with relaxation exercises done by mother which leads to slowing of fetal physical activity. Within hours of birth, infants able to imitate facial expressions, demonstrating ability to mirror behaviour of other person without learning. Young children learn best through face-to-face interactions rather than from watching videos or television. This emphasizes the important role of social learning in cognitive growth and development. 5% of children between 6-15 have a learning disability.
